Whilst many people back in the UK have been suffering from plummeting temperatures I made the most of some time off work to head abroad. However spending the holiday in the mountains of Bulgaria I was expecting much cooler temperatures but to my surprise the conditions were pretty balmy for this time of year. I spent the first half of the holiday in the Southwestern tip of the country on the edge of the Pirin mountains. Although I have visited here before I was only just finding my way with my first camera and somehow missed this place completely. A couple of hours searching through locations online and Google Earth picked up some promising vistas.
High up in the Pirin Mountains sits a very iconic town, with a population of only 400 it is the smallest city in Bulgaria and has a long and complex history. Melnik is surrounded by Sandstone pinnacles and pyramids caved out by the wind and rain over the centuries and came as a overwhelming surprise, as the sun set these cliff faces where illuminated by the soft warm glow creating a great contrast to the blue sky. I could have easily spent the whole holiday at this one spot but the lure of cheap beer and good company proved too great and I will sure to return next year.
Although known and visited as a destination is the sea of the country and the capital Sofia I can share that tourists actually miss the true spirit of Bulgaria, namely the mountains, small towns and people living there. I can offer you to visit Bulgaria in a different look, unknown to travel agents because of lack of advertising. Congratulations for choosing this place!

Otherwise this is awesome, bit like Bryce!
